modelling multimodal travel demand by applying data-driven analytics

Overview

This project will investigate the underlying decision mechanism of multimodal travel demand for South-East Queensland’s transport futures, with the goals:

(a) to identify opportunity to encourage higher adoption of active transport and public transport alternatives;

(b) to develop a functional multimodal hierarchy of SEQ for the movement of people;

(c) to inform principles in designing and planning an equitable multimodal mobility network by considering 'the ‘customer first’ vision of TMR.

The expected outcomes of this project will contribute to our understanding of multimodal travel behaviour with an emphasis on examining the role of sustainable and emerging transport modes. It will provide evidence-based approaches in achieving TMR’s ‘connect’ goal by facilitating multimodal transport’s role in support for growth, prosperity, sustainability and liveability.

It will use analytical approaches in travel demand, behavioural econometrics, and data engineering through the steps of:

  1. Developing an integrated data repository of multimodal travel demand and opportunities by compiling diverse datasets across multiple systems (travel survey, land use, accessibility, transport infrastructure, socioeconomic attributes and customer satisfaction data)

  2. Analysing existing multimodal travel demand patterns

  3. Developing a community-based multimodal mobility explorer tool

  4. Evaluating multimodal mobility opportunities of SEQ in the contexts of an evolving economy and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games
